THE MIND’S EYE: Why Seeing is Understanding

We don’t just “think” thoughts. We look at them, clarify them, and shine a light on them.

You have explored Hard (Touch). Now let’s look at Vision.

Imagine you are in a pitch-black room. You can’t navigate. You don’t know what is around you. Then, someone flips a switch. Suddenly, you know exactly where you are.

Imagine you are in a pitch-black room. You can’t navigate. You don’t know what is around you. Then, someone flips a switch. Suddenly, you know exactly where you are.

This physical experience—moving from darkness (ignorance) to light (knowledge)—is the basis for how we talk about intelligence. In Cognitive Linguistics, this is the Understanding is Seeing metaphor.

The Logic: Light allows us to see objects; Intelligence allows us to understand ideas.

1. Knowing is Seeing

When someone explains something to you, you don’t say “I hear what you mean.” You say:

  • “I see what you mean.”
  • “Let’s look at the facts.”
  • “It appears that he is lying.”

2. Intelligence is a Light Source

If knowing is seeing, then intelligence is the light that makes seeing possible.

  • “She is a bright student.”
    (Her mind emits light.)
  • “That was a brilliant idea.”
    (The idea shines intensely.)
  • “Can you shed some light on this topic?”
    (Help us see/understand it.)

3. Confusion is Darkness or Fog

Conversely, when we don’t understand, we describe it as a lack of light or obstructed vision.

  • “I am completely in the dark.”
  • “His explanation was murky.”
  • “I don’t have a clear picture of the situation.”

Vocabulary Tip

If you want to sound more persuasive, use “Visual” words. Instead of saying “I understand,” say “I see your point.” Instead of “explain this,” say “Illuminate this.” It triggers the brain’s visual cortex!
