BENEATH THE SURFACE: Why Truth Is “Deep”
In the physical world, valuable things (gold, roots, water) are hidden underground. In language, we view truth and intellect as things that require “digging” to find.
You have mastered the external dimensions of space (Direction & Proximity). Now we look at the internal dimension: Depth.
The Cognitive rule is: SIGNIFICANCE IS DEPTH. The surface is visible and easy, but often trivial. The “bottom” is hard to reach, but contains the core reality.
1. Intellect: Profound vs. Trivial
Smart ideas are “heavy” and sink to the bottom. Stupid ideas float on top.
- “That is a very deep thought.” (Complex and important.)
- “He is so shallow.” (He cares only about surface appearances.)
- “This book is over my head.” (It is too deep; I am drowning in it.)
2. Emotion: Immersion
Strong emotions are viewed as a deep liquid that surrounds us.
- “They are deeply in love.” (Fully immersed.)
- “He is in deep trouble.” (It surrounds him completely.)
- “I was moved deeply.” (It touched the core of my feelings.)
3. Investigation: Digging
Since truth is at the bottom, we must use tools to reach it.
- “We need to get to the bottom of this.” (Find the ultimate truth.)
- “We’ve barely scratched the surface.” (We have only learned a tiny part.)
- “Keep digging.” (Keep investigating.)
Did you know?
The word “Profound” comes from the Latin profundus. Pro means “before/forward” and fundus means “bottom.” A profound idea goes all the way to the bottom!
