MOVING FORWARD: Why The Future Is “Ahead”

We don’t just experience time; we walk through it. In English, the future is a destination in front of our eyes, and the past is the road we have already traveled.

You have mastered Up / Down (Gravity) and In/Out (Containers). Now let’s look at Forward/Back.

Cognitive Linguistics relies on the TIME IS A PATH frame. Because we walk forward with our eyes facing front, we map “The Future” onto the space in front of us.

The Core Frame: We face the Future and turn our back on the Past.

1. The Future is Front

We speak of future events as objects that we are approaching on a road.

  • “I’m looking forward to it.” (I am directing my vision to the future event.)
  • “She has a great future ahead of her.” (The future is on the path in front.)
  • “He was ahead of his time.” (He was located further down the timeline than others.)

2. The Past is Back

Once an event happens, we pass it. It moves behind us.

  • “We can’t look back now.” (Don’t focus on the past.)
  • “Put it behind you.” (Move away from the memory.)
  • “That was way back in 1990.” (A long distance behind.)

3. Progress is Forward Motion

If life is a journey, stopping is bad. We must keep moving “forward.”

  • “We need to move forward with the plan.” (Make progress.)
  • “It’s a huge step backward.” (A regression or failure.)
  • “She wants to get ahead in life.” (Overtake others in the race.)

Did you know?

In Aymara (a language in the Andes), this is reversed! They point forward to mean the Past (because they can see it/remember it) and backward to mean the Future (because it is unseen). But in English, we face the Future!
